The important kind of freedom

If, like me, you hadn’t read David Foster Wallace, author of Infinite Jest, before his suicide, a good place to start is his 2005 speech to the graduating class of Kenyon University.

The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day.

Victor Jara

It is a good day to remember Chilean folksinger and poet Victor Jara. Jara was murdered by the Pinochet regime 35 years ago. One of his murderers has finally been convicted. Jara’s memory and music live on. I can’t write more movingly than has already been done, so go read, see, and listen.

Kuchinich introduced articles of impeachment against Cheney today. He explained to a reporter that Cheney should be impeached first, because if we started with Bush, then Cheney would become president, and we’d end up having to impeach two presidents in a row. More here.
