Old instruments, modern technology

I would never have dreamed just a few years ago that I could get great world/roots music from the Internet.

iTunes is great if you want American pop, but Calabash is the place to go for more variety. Like Magnatune, they give a big chunk of their profit to the artists themselves. They don’t use copy protection, either, which makes it painless to transfer the music to my work computer.

Their site helped me discover some terrific artists: Sara Tavares, Marta Gómez, Kiran Ahluwalia. And I just bought Seu Jorge’s 2005 album Cru. Yummy stuff.

Music is unquestionably my biggest addiction!

It’s a good day when

Like some people have an insatiable hunger for thrills, I crave peace and quiet and lack of stimulation.

It’s a good day when I wake up later than 4:30 am, and I have the energy to answer nature when it calls, not a couple of hours later.

I’m having a good day so far.

I’m looking forward to my shower.

My nephew the sax player

I just found out that my nephew is learning to play the saxophone.

His mom says that after some practice he’s been learning to play at a lower-than-full-blast volume, which she must appreciate. I want to hear him play. I gotta visit or at least hear him play over the phone soon.

Tarot widget

I downloaded something new for my Mac the other day, and I love it. It’s a widget that will do classic Tarot readings.

I did a reading, asking what I should do about my health. The answers actually inspired me, as corny as that sounds. I like the way it helps you think about obstacles and resources as part of the same big picture.
