Gabriela Mistral
Having just mentioned her, I thought she deserved her own post. If you don’t know already, Gabriela Mistral was a Chilean schoolteacher and poet. Everyone knows about Pablo Neruda, but not many people—outside Chile, at least—know about Gabriela and her poems.
People should. Her voice is tender, sensuous, anguished, wise, and playful by turns. My favorite is her book Ternura (Tenderness), in which she speaks to children.
Ahem, don’t tell any librarians, but I still have her poetry that I never checked in…I couldn’t find a book in Spanish in print to buy…ahem…
Also lovely are Rafael Manriquez‘ musical settings, the album Canto a Gabriela.
My first interesting online acquaintance
I just met someone through last.fm. I liked her crazy wild gypsy music and I sent her a message about it. Now we’ve been getting acquainted. Her parents had to leave Chile during the dictatorship. She’s a big traveler, a musician, and helps her aunt teach school in Chile sometimes though she lives stateside otherwise.
It’s cool to have someone to appreciate Gabriela Mistral with!
Cooking
I am always trying to do more cooking, for the sake of my health and for the joy of it.
I will occasionally post a recipe until I’ve brought over everything I care about from the Hidey Hole Cookbook.
