Music, illness and fatigue

The two reasons I listen to so much music:

One: Music is humanity’s highest achievement.
Two: I’m tired and sickly.

A 2006 study showed that listening to music can reduce chronic pain and depression. Well, duh.

I don’t have chronic pain so much as lack of energy, digestive troubles, and difficulty sleeping. I use music to manipulate my energy level.

I can soothe my nerves and calm my heart rate by listening to Anonymous 4 singing Hildegard Von Bingen’s medieval compositions. (Scientists have some interesting hypotheses about music and heartrate; I recommend the linked article, but disregard the misleading headline.)

I like a hypnotic groove for workouts, so that I hardly notice the physical effort, like Issa Bagayogo’s earthy electronic Malian pop.

I may be barely able to drag myself out of bed some weekends, but I never get bored. Music brings me infinite worlds of feelings, experiences, and ideas, especially because I explore so many diverse kinds of music. And thanks to the Internet, of course, the amazing music delivery system that I’ve almost learned to take for granted.

And if I had no other reason for living, the ability to hear the works of Johann Sebastian Bach would be enough. Even, say, only Pablo Casals performing the Cello Suites.

Maya Angelou wrote, “Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.”

What do you listen to when you’re down, tired or ill? Do you have favorite “comfort music”?

Wordcamp!

I'm going to WordCamp I’m as excited as a kid going to summer daycamp for the first time.

Wordcamp is a gathering for WordPress users. WordPress is the software that runs this site, as well more than a million others around the world.

I plan to go with my most awesome blogging coworkers, Westi and Diana.

Registration closes July 9th, so if you haven’t signed up yet, don’t delay.

While the presentations may be interesting and useful, I’m mostly excited about meeting other WPers. I’ve been browsing the blogs of other attendees, even leaving a few comments here and there.

I hope to learn more about the many ways people use WordPress to meet a range of needs, and how they sell WordPress, their site-building services, etc. But mostly, it will be cool to get acquainted with all these cool bloggers. I can’t wait!

Music video: The White Stripes

The White Stripes: Icky Thump I have just discovered The White Stripes and I gotta say their album Icky Thump made a good first impression and it keeps growing on me. Love the humor and energy, love the styles, love the way Jack and Meg White have dug up some old musical “rags and bones” and made them into something new and irresistible.

Their web site: The White Stripes

Very engaging video below the fold, with subtitles in Spanish. Just so you’re warned, there’s a bit of political commentary. Tell me what you think!

Review: NIN, our friend as the world ends

Nine Inch Nails: Year Zero

Nine Inch Nails: Year Zero I normally tend to the sunny side of the musical street, but I’ve just been escorted on a trip through the apocalypse – and I loved it.

Diana, you were absolutely right:

Nine Inch Nails‘ Year Zero is wonderful.

I didn’t care for the brief sampling I had of Trent Reznor’s earlier work which to my admittedly innocent and ignorant ears sounded like a self-indulgent brat wailing about self-inflicted misery. To put it mildly, I haven’t been a fan.

But the new album (well, new to me ;-) is like a soundtrack to the end of the world. Like the best science fiction, most of it reflects current reality. It’s frightening the way current reality is frightening, and the feeling is heightened by superb artistry.

Now that I find the content interesting, I’m free to dive into the beauty of the sound. Can “lush” and “industrial” describe the same piece of music? In this case, yes.

As heedless greed and violence destroy us and our planet, it’s good to have a friend to sing it like it is, beautifully.

I’m not going to post a video here because I think you have to listen to the whole darn dark thing all together. And now I’m heading over to the NIN web site to check out all their teasers.

I know, I know, I’m so slow to get a clue. But I have to get to know and appreciate things in my own time.
